McLachlan's previous film, The Jammed, was an acclaimed, award-winning drama about Melbourne's sex slave trade. This new venture, Eliminated, is a black comedy about a reality-TV show called Who Wants To Be a Terrorist? and is designed as a post-politically correct look at post-9/11 fear-mongering. ''Terrorism is still a greater fear than climate change, yet more people die of bee stings than they do from terrorism,'' McLachlan says. Given the touchy topic, McLachlan didn't even bother seeking government funding. ''We're addressing the conflicting nature of how war and violence is accepted in our society,'' she explains. ''War is an acceptable means of killing people. Terrorism is an unacceptable means of killing people. Terrorists are evil people and generals and soldiers are venerated as great heroes. ''But they're all killing people, so we explore that territory. This is a film that's testing our moral ground all the time. And hopefully it'll turn out very funny.'' |
